Writing Mistake: Poor Time Management
Time management is a crucial skill for the IELTS Writing test, where candidates have only 60 minutes to complete both tasks. The recommended time allocation is 20 minutes for Task 1 and 40 minutes for Task 2. However, many test-takers struggle to manage their time effectively.
Some common time management issues include:
- Spending too much time on Task 1, leaving insufficient time for Task 2, which carries more weight in scoring.
- Running out of time and submitting incomplete responses.
- Rushing through the conclusion or skipping it entirely.
Failing to manage your time well can impact both the quality and completeness of your answers, resulting in lower scores for Task Achievement, Coherence, and Cohesion.
How to Avoid This Mistake
The best way to avoid time management issues is to practise under timed conditions and develop a clear strategy for each task.
a. Follow the Recommended Time Allocation
- Task 1: Spend 3-5 minutes analysing the task and planning, 12-14 minutes writing, and 2-3 minutes reviewing.
- Task 2: Allocate 5 minutes for planning, 30-32 minutes for writing, and 3-5 minutes for reviewing.
b. Use a Timer During Practice
Practising with a timer can help you get accustomed to the test’s time constraints. Focus on completing your tasks within the allocated time without sacrificing quality.
c. Prioritise Task 2
Since Task 2 contributes more to your overall writing score, ensure you allocate sufficient time to this task. If you’re running out of time, it’s better to finish Task 2 fully and provide a shorter but complete response for Task 1.
d. Develop a Writing Routine
Create a consistent approach for each task. For example:
- Task 1: Introduction, overview, detailed paragraph 1, detailed paragraph 2.
- Task 2: Introduction, body paragraph 1, body paragraph 2, conclusion.
Examples of This Mistake and How to Fix It
Poor Example
Task 1 Response:
The graph shows the increase in sales over the past year. Sales increased significantly in January and February. March also saw a slight increase…
Problem: The candidate spends too much time describing every detail of Task 1, leaving little time for Task 2.
Improved Example
Task 1 Response:
The graph illustrates sales trends over the past year. Overall, sales increased steadily, with significant growth in January and February. The trend continued with moderate increases in March and April, followed by a plateau in May.
Why It Works: This response summarises key trends without going into excessive detail, allowing more time for Task 2.
Task 2 Response (Before Fixing):
Technology is very important. It has improved communication, but it also has drawbacks.
Problem: This response is too brief and lacks depth because the candidate ran out of time.
Improved Task 2 Response:
Technology plays a crucial role in modern communication. On one hand, it has made communication faster and more accessible. For instance, video conferencing allows people to connect across the globe in real time. On the other hand, it can lead to issues such as reduced face-to-face interactions and a sense of isolation. In my opinion, while technology offers significant advantages, it is essential to strike a balance between online and offline communication.
Why It Works: This version is more detailed and well-structured, demonstrating effective time management.
