Grading Criteria for the IELTS Writing Exam

The IELTS writing exam consists of two parts. Task 1 Academic of the IELTS exam consists of a 150 word report, whereas  Task 1 General of the IELTS exam consist of a 150 word letter. Task 2 Academic of the IELTS exam consists of 250 word essay, and Task 2 General of the IELTS exam also consists of a 250 word essay.

The IELTS writing grading criteria consist of the following:
Task Response:
1. Do you write 250 words
2. Do you answer the topic
3. Do you cover all parts of the task

Coherence and Cohesion:
Coherence refers to your writing being easy to understand.
Cohesion refers to your essay having a logical structure. Paragraphs should focus on a clear topic and sentences should have logical connections.

Lexical Resource:
To score highly you must correctly use higher level words, and pay attention to your word endings (s, ed). In addition you should try to show a range of vocabulary. This means you should avoid repeating words too many times.

Grammatical Range:
To score highly you need to use a variety of sentence types (simple, compound, complex) and also avoid grammatical errors, such as with articles and prepositions.
