How to write a Task 1 summary for a map
The map below shows the development of a seaside village between 1995 and present.
Write a short report for a university lecturer describing the information shown below.
Student Introduction and Summary
The two maps represent the same seaside village as it was in 1995 and at present. Overall, it can be observed that the village have modernized much and became more convenient for the dwellers and tourists.
Grammar
You will notice that – “the village have modernized much” has changed to “the village has modernized a lot”
Why?
First of all, the “have” needs to change to “has” because there is only one village and “has” is used for singular nouns.
Next, we need to look at how “much” and “a lot” are used,
Much is used to express that there is a large quantity of something and is used in negative sentences and questions.
e.g.
Has it modernized much?
No, it has not modernized much.
Note: We almost never use much in positive sentences, we almost always use a lot, a lot of or lots of.
A lot /A lot of / Lots of – used to express that there is a large quantity of something and are used in positive sentences, negative sentences and questions with countable or uncountable nouns.
Note: lots of is more informal. It can be used with countable or uncountable nouns, and occasionally in questions.
As the phrase in question, “the village have modernized much” is a positive sentence we can change it to – “the village has modernized a lot”.
Summary.
Another issue is whether the maps really show that “village has modernized much and became more convenient for the dwellers and tourists.”
I cannot see anything that clearly shows any kind of modernization…. It could be urbanisation due to the loss of green spaces to man-made constructions. As for convenience, for people living there it seems to have got less convenient as they have lost their shops, market and fishing port.
