Why Your Writing Isn’t Improving: The Case for Human Correction and Feedback
Many IELTS candidates spend months—even years—trying to improve their writing, yet their score remains stubbornly the same. They practise essay after essay, rely on AI tools, read sample responses, and memorise vocabulary. Despite this effort, the results barely change. The reason is simple: writing improvement demands human correction and personalised feedback.
AI and grammar checkers are limited. They may help you catch basic mistakes such as subject-verb agreement or missing punctuation, but they fail to identify the deeper issues that affect your IELTS writing score—things like coherence, tone, essay structure, and idea development. Worse still, these tools often provide generic or misleading suggestions that can make your writing sound robotic or unnatural.
As a former IELTS examiner, I’ve assessed thousands of Task 1 and Task 2 scripts. I know exactly what the examiners are looking for: precise task achievement, logical organisation, flexible vocabulary, and a range of accurate grammar. These cannot be mastered without specific, individualised guidance.
Let us look at Task Achievement. Many candidates think they are answering the question properly, when in fact they are going off-topic, failing to fully develop their points, or misunderstanding part of the task. AI tools almost never detect this. But a trained human tutor will show you exactly where and why you’re losing marks.
Coherence and Cohesion is another area where self-study falls short. Simply adding linking phrases like “however” or “on the other hand” does not guarantee cohesion. Your writing needs to flow naturally, with each idea building upon the last. This is something only a person with expertise in IELTS writing can judge and teach.
Lexical Resource and Grammatical Range and Accuracy are also misunderstood by most candidates. For instance, using rare or complex words incorrectly can lower your score. Likewise, writing overly simple sentences—even with no errors—won’t get you beyond Band 6. A good tutor provides realistic, level-appropriate vocabulary, shows you how to vary your grammar, and helps you develop a style that is both accurate and fluent.
The biggest benefit of working with a real tutor is targeted feedback. When you submit writing to me, you don’t just get corrections—you get explanations. You learn why a sentence doesn’t work and how to fix it. Over time, this leads to real, measurable improvement. You develop new habits, gain clarity in your expression, and understand exactly what the examiner expects.
If you’ve been stuck at Band 6.5 or want to reach Band 7 or above, it’s time to stop guessing and start learning with purpose.
