Why a Real IELTS Tutor Is Better Than AI: Insights from an Ex-Examiner
In the current age of artificial intelligence, many IELTS candidates are turning to chatbots and AI-powered tools to prepare for the test. While these resources can offer some assistance, they are no substitute for a real human tutor—especially one with IELTS examiner experience. Having marked thousands of scripts and conducted speaking tests for the IELTS, I know first-hand what the examiners look for, and I can confidently say that AI tools simply do not understand the exam the way a trained human does.
Let us start with writing. Many students use AI tools to evaluate their writing tasks, expecting accurate feedback. However, AI does not assess based on the actual IELTS writing band descriptors. It cannot adequately judge coherence and cohesion, identify unnatural collocations, or explain how to improve a weak argument. It may give you a vague Band 7 estimate, but without personalised feedback, you’ll never know what you are truly doing wrong—or how to fix it.
When it comes to speaking, the shortcomings of AI become even more obvious. Fluency, pronunciation, and interactive communication are complex areas that require human intuition to assess. A real tutor can point out issues such as a flat intonation, unnatural pacing, or unclear pronunciation that AI cannot accurately detect or explain. Furthermore, AI is not equipped to simulate natural conversation or follow up with spontaneous questions, which is precisely what occurs in the IELTS speaking test.
Another key point is that AI cannot provide tailored strategies based on your individual strengths and weaknesses. I begin every course by assessing where my students are, what their target band is, and which areas they need to improve. Some students need help with task achievement, others with grammar accuracy or idea development. A one-size-fits-all chatbot cannot adapt the way a human tutor can.
Finally, there is the issue of motivation and accountability. When working with a real tutor, you receive not only instruction but also encouragement, correction, and structure. Students are far more likely to stay on track, do their homework, and make genuine progress when they know someone is personally invested in their success.
In conclusion, AI can be a useful supplementary tool, but it will never replace the depth, adaptability, and insight that a real IELTS tutor offers—especially one with examiner experience. If you are serious about achieving a high band score, personalised human feedback is not just helpful—it is essential.
