The 5 Biggest IELTS Task 1 Mistakes I Saw This Week
After marking a batch of IELTS Academic Task 1 reports, I noticed that many students were making the same mistakes. If you can avoid these problems, your score for Task Achievement and Coherence & Cohesion is likely to improve.
1. Weak Overviews
The most common issue was writing an overview that was too general.
❌ Overall, there were some differences between the categories.
✅ Overall, the highest percentages were recorded among middle-aged adults, while the oldest age groups showed the largest gender differences.
Your overview should clearly identify the most important features of the data.
2. Missing Comparisons
Many students described figures separately instead of comparing them.
❌ The figure for males was 25%. The figure for females was 20%.
✅ Males accounted for a higher proportion than females, at 25% and 20% respectively.
Remember: Task 1 is often more about comparing than describing.
3. Describing Every Number
Some reports tried to mention too many figures.
A Band 7+ report focuses on:
- key trends
- major differences
- important comparisons
It does not need to describe every data point.
4. Poor Paragraph Organisation
Several reports contained relevant information but grouped it poorly.
A good structure is:
- Introduction
- Overview
- Body Paragraph 1
- Body Paragraph 2
Group similar information together and avoid jumping between categories.
5. Unclear Data Descriptions
Some students used language that made the data difficult to understand.
For example:
❌ The percentage increased high.
✅ The percentage increased significantly.
Accurate language is essential because unclear descriptions can affect both Task Achievement and Coherence.
Final Advice
To improve your Task 1 score, focus on:
✔ Writing a clear overview
✔ Making direct comparisons
✔ Selecting key features only
✔ Organising information logically
✔ Describing data accurately
Many students already understand the charts well. The next step is presenting the information more clearly and strategically.
