Personalised IELTS Study Plans: Why One-Size-Fits-All Doesn’t Work

Personalised IELTS Strategies: Why Only a Tutor Can Tailor the Test to You

Every IELTS candidate is different. Some struggle with developing ideas in Writing Task 2, others need help understanding paraphrased questions in the Reading Test. Some speak fluently but make frequent grammar mistakes. Others have strong grammar but freeze during the Speaking Test. This is why generic test preparation—whether it’s online courses, YouTube tutorials, or AI tools—often fails to deliver results. The solution? A personalised IELTS strategy from a real tutor.

As a former IELTS examiner and full-time IELTS coach, I begin every student’s journey with an assessment. I analyse their current level, identify their strengths and weaknesses, and design a plan tailored to their goals. This level of attention simply isn’t possible with AI platforms or one-size-fits-all courses.

Let’s say your target is Band 7. You may think you’re close, but without knowing which criterion is holding you back—Task Achievement? Lexical Resource? Coherence?—you’ll struggle to improve. A good tutor will break down your performance, show you where you’re losing marks, and explain how to improve those exact areas.

For example:

  • If you tend to write off-topic essays, I will teach you how to analyse the question prompt and create focused plans.
  • If your speaking is repetitive, I’ll help you build topic-specific vocabulary and expand your answers naturally.
  • If you keep making the same grammar mistakes, I’ll give you targeted drills and explanations to eliminate them permanently.

Generic IELTS content is not designed for you. It cannot adapt to your learning style, your past mistakes, or your target score. Only a real tutor can do that.

Furthermore, test strategy goes beyond the skills themselves. You need to manage your time during the Reading Test, avoid traps in Listening, and stay calm and coherent during the Speaking Test. A human tutor not only teaches these techniques, but also helps you practise them in real time, so they become second nature.

Another benefit of personal tuition is accountability. I assign writing tasks, conduct regular speaking sessions, and monitor your progress closely. You will always know where you stand, and you’ll never feel lost or unsure about what to do next. With regular feedback and step-by-step guidance, students feel more confident, focused, and in control of their preparation.

In short, your IELTS journey is unique, and your preparation should be too. AI may provide general advice, but only a human tutor can offer a strategy designed specifically for you—and that’s exactly what I offer.
