Model answer for an opinion essay regarding the rising number of cars on the roads.

The first car appeared on British roads in 1888. By the year 2000 there may be as many as 29 million vehicles on British roads.

Alternative forms of transport should be encouraged and international laws introduced to control car ownership and use.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Due to the rapidly increasing number of automobiles on the road, it has been suggested that the use of different types of transportation and new global regulations over the usage and ownership of cars should be introduced. I totally agree with this because of the need to reduce problems caused by the rising number of cars on the road.

The main reason why I think different types of transportation are needed is in order to reduce pollution. Cars running on petrol are omitting huge amounts of toxic gases, but these can be reduced if cars run on cleaner sources of energy. For instance, the pollution from electric cars is significantly less and therefore if people are encouraged to drive them this will reduce pollution. Furthermore, new technologies are emerging that may enable the pollution from cars to be totally eliminated.

I strongly believe that international regulations are also required regarding how cars are used and owned in order to decrease crime is related to cars. Cars have become a target for criminals because of their high value. This is particularly the case with more expensive brands of automobiles. Due to globalization, it has become relatively easy for thieves to send stolen vehicles to other countries. In order to deter this activity and unable these criminals to be brought to justice international laws are required. For instance, if there were a global registry for vehicles, a vehicle’s owner could be identified in any country of the world and this would prevent a stolen car from being sold in another country.

In conclusion, I totally agree that alternative types of transportation are needed to reduce pollution and that international laws are required to reduce criminal activity related to vehicles. Together these can reduce some of the harmful effects from a rising number of vehicles on the road.
