Logic chain for IELTS Writing
A good way to develop an argument is to think of each body paragraph as a chain of reasoning. The topic sentence gives the main idea, but the following sentences need to show why that idea is true.
A useful framework is:
Point → Explanation → Mechanism → Example → Result
For example, if your topic sentence is: Online learning can improve students’ independence, you should not only repeat this idea. You need to explain the mechanism:
This is because students often have to manage their own schedules, review materials independently, and solve problems without constant teacher supervision. As a result, they gradually become more responsible for their own progress.
The key is to make sure every sentence answers one of these questions: Why is this true? How does it happen? What is the result?
If a sentence does not clearly connect back to the topic sentence, it may weaken cohesion. So, after writing each sentence, check whether it directly develops the central idea of the paragraph.
Example
Topic sentence:
One reason online learning can be beneficial is that it encourages students to become more independent.
Developed paragraph:
One reason online learning can be beneficial is that it encourages students to become more independent. This is because online courses often require learners to manage their own study time, organise their materials, and complete tasks without constant supervision from a teacher. As students have to make these decisions by themselves, they gradually develop better self-discipline and problem-solving skills. For example, a student taking an online English course may need to decide when to review vocabulary, practise listening, or submit written assignments. Over time, this can make the student more responsible for their own progress, which is an important skill not only in education but also in the workplace.
Explanation of the logic:
The paragraph works because each sentence develops the topic sentence step by step. The first sentence gives the main idea: online learning improves independence. The next sentence explains why this happens. The third sentence explains the mechanism, or how this process creates independence. The example then makes the idea more concrete. Finally, the last sentence explains the broader result.
A strong paragraph should not simply repeat the topic sentence. It should show a clear chain of reasoning: main idea → explanation → mechanism → example → result.
