Some people think that the teenage years are the happiest of our lives, while others believe that adult life brings happiness.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion
There is no doubt that changes in value systems in many countries in recent years have increasingly led to a freer world for the younger generations to explore their interests. As a result, sociologists often wonder if the happiest years of our lives are in our teens rather than in adult life. In this essay, I am going to examine this question from both points of view and then give my own opinion on the matter.
One obvious benefit of being a teenager is that apart from the need to do well in your studies there are no other responsibilities. This means that you can spend your free time with your friends and enjoy life as much as possible. The summer holidays, in particular, can be a time for travelling and indulging yourself in your hobbies and interests while at the same experiencing so many new things. The key to having fun as a teenager is knowing that you have lots of free time and a thirst for trying new and ever more exciting things.
There is no denying, however, that adults have the advantage when it comes to having more disposable income and not having to ask permission to do anything. Certain places, like pubs and clubs, once restricted because of age, are now available and problems in getting to certain places through not having personal transport have disappeared. Although adults often have a lot more responsibilities than teenagers, this is often more than compensated for by knowing from past experience what you really enjoy and having the means to indulge in these activities.
In conclusion, I believe both sides of the argument have their merits. On balance, however, I tend to believe that given a reasonable income then adulthood is more likely to be happier than the teen years because as an adult you can focus on the things you really enjoy and spend your money and time doing the things that make you the happiest.
