Some IELTs guide books recommend that examinees avoid some cliches such as “Some people believe” and “On one hand, on the other hand.” But I feel the impressions on those expressions vary from grader to grader and some of the greatest essays actually include those phrases. What is your take on this? Shouldn’t we, non-native speakers, pay too much attention to that? Or do we have to take the usage into more consideration?
