The key is to use lots of complex sentences.
Understanding Complex Sentences in Essay Writing
A complex sentence is a sentence that contains one independent clause and at least one dependent clause. In essay writing, especially for exams like IELTS, using complex sentences can help demonstrate your proficiency in English and your ability to convey intricate ideas effectively.
Components of a Complex Sentence
Independent Clause: This clause can stand alone as a complete sentence. It contains a subject and a predicate and expresses a complete thought.
Dependent Clause: This clause cannot stand alone as a complete sentence. It provides additional information to the independent clause and usually begins with a subordinating conjunction (e.g., although, because, since, unless, while).
How to Form Complex Sentences
Identify the Main Idea: Determine the primary thought you want to convey, which will be your independent clause.
Add Additional Information: Introduce a dependent clause that adds detail, context, or a contrasting idea to your main idea.
Use Subordinating Conjunctions: Connect the dependent clause to the independent clause using appropriate subordinating conjunctions.
