In 1800, New York City had a relatively small population of 79,216 people. Manhattan was by far the most heavily populated district, with 60,515 residents, representing 76% of the city’s total population. By contrast, the combined population of Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island was only 18,701, accounting for 24%.
By 1900, the population of New York City had risen sharply to 3,437,202. Manhattan still contained the most residents, with a population of 1,850,093, although its share of the total had fallen to 54%. Meanwhile, the combined population of the other four districts rose from 18,701 in 1800 to 1,587,109 in 1900, representing 46% .
In 2000, New York City’s population reached just over 8 million people. Although Manhattan’s population was still much higher than in 1800, it declined slightly from its 1900 peak to 1,538,096, and its share of the total population fell significantly to only 19%. In contrast, the combined population of the other districts grew substantially to 6,471,089, accounting for the vast majority of residents at 81%.

Total loans began at approximately 16,000 in 2007 and then fluctuated upward, reaching around 21,000 in 2011. After this, the figure generally declined, falling to roughly 19,000 by 2013. Loans then started increasing, rising to their highest point of approximately 22,000 at the end of the period.
