CAMBRIDGE 14 ESSAYS ANSWERS General Writing Test

The growth of online shopping will one day lead to all shops in towns and cities closing.
Do you agree or disagree?

There is a suggestion that the rise of shopping on the internet will eventually force the closure of all stores in urban areas. I believe it is highly unlikely that it will completely replace physical retail and lead to the closure of all stores in towns and cities.

One reason why I consider this is unthinkable is the value of personal interaction and customer service in retail. Physical stores offer the opportunity for customers to ask questions and receive recommendations from sales staff, which is something that cannot be replicated through online shopping. For instance, clothing and other items that require fitting or trying on are often best purchased in person with guidance from trained professionals. This personal interaction is important to many consumers and is likely to keep them coming back to physical stores.

Another explanation for my negative view that the disappearance of retail outlets is unlikely is the issue of delivery delays and problems. While online shopping can be convenient, there is always the risk of delays or issues with the delivery of purchases. This can be frustrating for customers and may prevent them from choosing online shopping over physical retail. Additionally, certain products, such as fresh produce or flowers, are not well suited to being shipped and may be damaged in transit.

In conclusion, I reaffirm my stance that it is inconceivable that the rise of online shopping will lead to the closure of all stores in towns and cities. This is because online shopping cannot completely replace the value of personal interaction and customer service, or the convenience of being able to purchase certain products in person without unexpected delays or damage from deliveries. Physical retail will continue to have a place in the modern economy, alongside the growth of online shopping.

Some believe educational qualification is necessary to be successful and others believe that education is not necessary to get success.
Discuss both views and give your opinion

The question of whether educational certification contributes to success is a topic of debate, with some arguing that it is essential and others claiming that it is not required. This essay will elaborate on valid points on both sides of the argument, before ultimately explaining why I believe qualifications are not vital.

Supporters of the importance of educational qualifications have their reasons.  The firsts is that it can provide individuals with a range of skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as providing specialized training and knowledge in a particular field. For example, doctors require years of theoretical and practical training to be able to effectively and safely practice medicine. Additionally, a tertiary degree can serve as a signal to employers that an individual has a certain level of aptitude and dedication, leading to a wider range of job opportunities.

On the other hand, it is also true that educational qualification is not the only path to success. Many prolific individuals have achieved it without formal education, through self-learning, hard work, and determination. There are many instances of entrepreneurs such as Mark Zuckerberg who dropped out of college and went on to succeed in commerce. Furthermore, the value of educational qualification can vary depending on the field and the individual’s goals. In some cases, practical experience and skills may be more important than formal education. Often top salespeople rely on their personality and knowledge of a product rather than any degree to achieve greatness in their field.

In conclusion, although both views have logical reasoning, I consider while graduation with a qualification can be valuable in certain circumstances, it is not the only path to success. In my opinion, it is important to consider both the advantages and limitations of educational qualifications and to recognize that there are viable alternatives based on an individual’s goals, strengths, and priorities.

Some people say the main way to be happy in life is to have a lot of money.
How might having a lot of money make people happy?
What other things in life can make people happy?

The question of what makes people joyful is a complex one, and many individuals believe that being wealthy is the key to happiness. This essay will describe why having financial security can provide certain benefits, and other factors that contribute to happiness.

There are several ways being rich can contribute to contentment. One way is by providing a sense of security and stability. With financial resources, individuals are able to meet their basic needs and have the freedom to pursue their goals and interests. For instance, they need not worry about health issues as they can afford the best medical care for themselves and loved ones. Money can also provide access to opportunities and experiences that may not be available otherwise, such as travel or education. Being able to vacation in various parts of the world to experience cultures and natural environments will result in invigorating experiences with no time for boredom.

However, it is important to recognize that money is not the only factor that contributes to happiness. Other things in life, such as relationships, personal fulfilment, and a sense of purpose, can also play a significant role in pleasure. Research has shown that having strong social connections and a sense of belonging is important for overall well-being. Moreover, activities that provide a sense of accomplishment and meaning can also contribute to happiness. These can often involve no money at all, for example volunteering at the local foodbank to assist those in greater need.

In conclusion, having a lot of money can provide certain benefits and contribute to happiness through security and novel experiences. Nevertheless, it is not the only factor that determines happiness, as family and friends, and a sense of resolve, can also play an important part in overall well-being. It is important to consider a range of factors when seeking happiness, rather than placing all of one’s focus on financial resources.

Many people work long hours, leaving very little time for leisure activities.
Does this situation have more advantages or more disadvantages?

A common trend is for individuals to spend excessive time working and neglect pastimes. It is clear that the downsides of working long hours including compromised physical and mental health, alongside impaired relationships outweigh the benefits of increased income, and a sense of accomplishment.

One disadvantage of working long hours is the impact on an individual’s physical and mental health. Labouring for extended periods can be physically and mentally exhausting, and can lead to stress, burnout, and an increased risk of health problems. Additionally, it can lead to a lack of work-life balance, which can be detrimental to an individual’s overall well-being and quality of life. For example, many leisure activities involve physical activity as opposed to the sedentary nature of most contemporary office-based roles.

Another negative of prioritising work over pleasure is the impact on personal relationships. Working long hours can leave very little time for social activities and can strain relationships with family and friends. This can lead to feelings of isolation and disconnection, as loved ones feel neglected and seek alternative connections, possibly resulting in affairs or even divorce.

However, it is also true that working long hours can have some upsides. For instance, individuals who work overtime may be able to earn more money, which can provide financial security and allow them to afford a better standard of living. Additionally, career focus may provide a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of being productive and successful.

In conclusion, while working long hours may have some advantages, such as the potential for increased income and a sense of accomplishment, there are more significant disadvantages that should be considered, including harm to physical and mental health, and broken human connections. Therefore, it is important to balance the need for work with time for leisure activities and personal pursuits.
