Academic & General Training β Write a clear essay with relevant ideas
1. Understand the exact question
- Identify the essay type.
- Check whether you need to give an opinion, discuss both sides, or answer two questions.
- Do not write a memorised essay.
Task 2 rewards relevance.
2. Plan before you write
- Spend 3β5 minutes planning.
- Decide your position.
- Choose two strong main ideas.
- Plan one clear point for each body paragraph.
Good planning prevents repetition and weak ideas.
3. Write a clear introduction
- Paraphrase the topic.
- Give your position if the question asks for it.
- Briefly introduce what the essay will discuss.
The examiner should understand your answer immediately.
4. Develop one idea per paragraph
- Start with a clear topic sentence.
- Explain the idea.
- Add a result, reason or example.
- Do not list too many points.
One well-developed idea is better than three weak ones.
5. Stay focused on the task
- Answer every part of the question.
- Keep your opinion consistent.
- Avoid going off-topic.
- Link every paragraph to the question.
Task Response is about answering the question fully.
6. Use natural academic language
- Use precise vocabulary that fits the topic.
- Avoid memorised phrases that sound unnatural.
- Use linking words carefully, not excessively.
Clear language is better than risky language.
7. Check your essay
Use your last 2β3 minutes to check:
- word count: 250+ words
- grammar and spelling
- punctuation
- paragraphing
- missing articles
- verb agreement
- whether you answered the question fully
