True False Not Given

True False Not Given

Reading Question type: Yes/No/Not given (T/F/NG)
YES = all information is the same
NO = there is contradictory information
NOT GIVEN =a key point in the question is missing in the text

Imagine the text says:
Many children like chocolate ice-cream.
Now let’s see how each would match to the three types of answers.
YES = all information is the same
A lot of kids like chocolate ice-cream. (A lot of kids = many children and the flavor is the same)

NO = there is contradictory information
Few children like chocolate ice-cream (few is the opposite of many so it is a “no” answer)

NOT GIVEN =a key point in the question is missing in the text
1.Many children like vanilla ice-cream. (we know they like chocolate ice-cream, but we don’t know if they like vanilla flavor or not, so it is not given)
2.Most children like chocolate ice-cream. (most = over 50%, but many = could be less than 50% or could be more, so it is not given.

The last example shows how important it is to understand qualifying words (often for multiple choice questions)

such as:

  • mainly
  • Usually
  • the majority
  • Many
  • Most
